Long time company member and our current Coordinator of artistic programming Ana Mrak will be teaching dance classes for professional dance artists in Zagreb Dance Center next week 9.11.2020 – 13.11.2020. in the mornings from 10 AM till 11.30 AM. Members of Studio will also be attending her dance classes there.

The classes are open for professional dance artists, but due to limited number of participants it is obligatory to apply on info@zagrebackiplesnicentar.hr

Dear dance lovers! We have prepared a treat for You! We have created a dance quiz with questions from first Croatian pub quiz about dance, which happened after the premiere of SPECTACLE. It was created and conducted by the quiz master Mario Kovač. So, test Your knowledge and have fun with Studio’s Dance Quiz!

After a succesful premiere performances, our new production is going to be performed again this Sunday, October, 18th on High school yard Elipsa, at 5PM, as a part of DANCE INN/OUT Festival, organized by De Facto Theatre Company. Reserve Your ticket on time, the number of spectators is limited due to current epidemiological measures.

After the premiere of Spectacle, we are preparing a real treat for all those eager to merge mind and body: the first Croatian pub quiz about contemporary dance! The quiz will be assembled and conducted by European quiz champion in the category of performing arts – Mario Kovač and the questions will tackle the history of contemporary dance all around the globe and also in Croatia. There will also be a special category dedicated to Studio Contemporary Dance Company. We will occasionally publish small chunks of information which could make its way into the quiz on our web pages and also on social media, so don’t forget to follow us here and also on Facebook and Instagram. The rules are simple: gather a team or come alone and apply for the quiz there, in Regular Bar, play and learn with us. And, don’t worry, You won’t have to reveal Your answers live in front of the audience. Every team (sitting around its own table) will have their own paper form for answers and the secrets of Your eventually wrong answers will go to the grave together with Your Master of the Ceremony who will, after the quiz, magically transform into a DJ and make You dance and burn away all the calories You will gain during the pub quiz. We are looking forward to meet You there!

Pub quiz is a part of Studio’s project Audience Development and is supported by the funds of Croatian Ministry of Culture.

We are happy to announce the premiere of our new performance SPECTACLE, choreographed by Irma Omerzo, which is going to take place on October, 10th, 2020 at 5 PM on the high school yard Elipsa (ulica Vjekoslava Klaića 8, Zagreb). There will also be a second performance on the next day, October, 11th also at 5 PM in the same place.

New performance by Studio Contemporary Dance Company ’SPECTACLE’, choreographed by Irma Omerzo, questions the heritage of this eldest Croatian contemporary dance company. However, instead of a classic hommage performance, the author approaches Studio’s tradition by using it for questioning conditions, meanings and reasons of collectiveness in present time, on stage and outside of it. By generating dance vocabulary from selected photographies of dance performances produced by Studio, specific dance experience of performers and massive ‘spectacular’ choreographies, in this work Omerzo questions perspectives of unison movement and the possibilities of its deconstruction while, at the same time, searching for boundaries, frames and combinations of collectiveness. The title of the performance is at the same time a reference to the fascination by unison movement in mainstream culture, but also a reminder of the potential which surfaces as a consequence of its persistence. ’SPECTACLE’ in this sense denies traditional protocols of spectacularity which insists on uniformity, replacing it with emphasis on the potential of being together in a way that affirms also individuality in this collectiveness.

This project is a second co-production between Public and Private and Studio Contemporary Dance Company from Zagreb. Due to Corona situation, we were not able to proceed with the artistic process as planned, during which the dancers from Zagreb and Berlin would work together in both cities. We didn’t want to cancel or postpone the project. Therefore we came up with the solution of creating a piece that will be played by two different teams: one from Zagreb and one from Berlin. Jasna has been creating the work with both teams in their cities. End of October/beginning of November, at the festival Open Spaces in Berlin, both teams will premier the work. The premier in Zagreb is planned for the next year. Due to special circumstances, this work-in-progress showing is closed for the public because of extremely limited number of seats in the audience.

„Healers“ explores the phenomenon of “life coaching” by analysing various healing strategies from strictly medical up to alternative – spiritual fields. In the main focus is space where the performance is taking place. That space is imagined as a living organism whose relationship with people that inhabit it, is disturbed and damaged. This is a starting point from which the imaginary about developing different kind of the relationship between human and non human, healer and patient, stage and performers can grow.
The goal of this choreographic endeavour is, by using subtle humor that maintains a healthy distance from the divine, and encourages thinking about human abilities in creating different belief systems, to awaken a desire for different visions and imaginations of the world we live in.
